Stick Around for Better Health
By Tom Herrin
For all those who are looking for just the right thing that can help provide better health, they are not alone. Plenty of people are looking for that just right thing that could make the difference between fragile health and more robust health. Everyone would probably prefer good health, but many are unwilling to pay the price that comes with such an effort. Adding a few simple things can pay off in a big way. Whether it is a few more minutes per day of traditional exercise or some other kind of activity, entering that new phase of personal development can be the real deal. A good game of field hockey is a simple way to get the family or group going while doing something good for all.
It Can Build Teamwork
Whether it is in school or at work, teamwork is a critical part of success. While it is not directly part of health, it can be indirectly. When people function better as a team, they will have a better feeling of accomplishment and self-worth. In a work environment, teams are important to overall efficiency and production. In school, it can be a vital part of what people do in a classroom. Even in families, effective teamwork can help with problem-solving and making families work together with greater unity. Playing a team sport such as field hockey encourages development of these skills.
It Can Build Endurance
As people participate in something that requires stopping, starting, running, and walking, they will have a better opportunity to build endurance. This can make breathing more efficient and recovery from exertion faster. When people play a casual game, they will be able to pace themselves and avoid doing too much too fast.
It Can Be Fun
We have played field hockey or gym hockey occasionally. It can become a fast-paced game for those who wish, but it can be slow and moderate if you want. It is one of those games that gets you naturally motivated. There is something about getting out there in the middle of things that makes you feel energized. When I have played it, it has been a lot of fun. When we have had kids play it, they almost fight each other to get out there and take part. It can be great for a family activity as well as with a group of friends. If you are feeling like trying something new, pick up sticks and give it a try.
