High Intensity Training May Help Cut Time

By Tom Herrin

It seems that most people are in a hurt for ways to save time in everything they do.  Whether it is going about the daily work routine or doing something else that seriously needs attention, time is often of the essence.  In order to be successful, they have to search for ways to cut activities or somehow shorten them.  It can be a difficult balance to achieve.  For those who may feel the need to exercise but find ways to do so in a shorter period of time, increasing intensity in brief spurts may be the best option, and it may be done without really compromising the goal.

Concentrating on a Few Things May Work Well

There are many kinds of workouts these days in which participants do some kind of exercise with high intensity followed by very moderate activity.  This alternating of pace seems to work well.  In one study, Martin Gabala reportedly took 27 people who were basically inactive.  They were divided into three groups for study.  One did a 45-minute cycling workout.  One did nothing at all.  The third group alternated moderate cycling on an exercise bike for a couple of minutes with a few seconds burst of the same bike.  The results of the brief spurts of intense exercise were good.

Even Moderate Activity in Short Sessions May Help

Intense exercise is not for everyone.  Some are just not ready for that kind of challenge.  Other studies have shown good effects on overall health by simply riding such a bike steadily for 10 minutes at a time.  The results of these have shown participants to be happier as well as better able to perform some mental tasks more proficiently.  Anytime people can feel better about themselves in their activity, it is generally considered to be a good situation.

Personalize What We Do

It is fortunate that we simply don't have to fit into the same mold.  Many times, we seem to feel that we need to measure up to a certain standard as we do anything.  While there are plenty of good programs available, we can make something that works for us individually.  It is important that we plan and make decisions according to whatever goals we set for ourselves.  Let yours guide you as you plan to be healthier and protect yourself against common problems.  Knowing where we want to go is a major factor in getting there.
