What Color Was Dinner Yesterday?
By Tom Herrin
People may not give much thought to what color a meal was. Unless it was something really out of the ordinary, it was probably just another meal. That is not to say it wasn't good, but many times meals are not unique enough to stand out from others. Especially if the contents are much the same as the day before, meals become somewhat mundane. When this happens, particularly if they are made up of a lot of white and brown foods, they may not be offering everything that could be available in the way of healthy foods. An easy way to fix that problem is to add some color, and the more that can be added, the better.
Put a Little Red on the Plate
One of the fastest ways to get someone's attention is to add something red to a meal. It is a real attention grabber. Red tends to make the meal stand out. How many times is it seen at some kind of holiday? Some of benefits of red foods include possibly reducing the risks of some cancers, diabetes, and some heart disease. There are plenty of these foods to choose from. A few are red peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, cherries, and watermelons. There are lots more.
Some Greens Have a Bad Reputation
Many people shy away from greens for no reason except that they were told to eat them when they were young. The days of holding the nose to taste them may be behind. Some of them may help to detox the body, improve mood, and increase energy. They are not all as bad as some people may recall. Some foods on this list are really good tasting. Some of these include avocado, green apples, asparagus, spinach, and green grapes. There are quite a few more. It is a good mix.
Take in All You Can
Once you get turned on to colors in meals, it can seem a little addicting. In our home, we try our best to get a variety of colors whenever possible. Taking turns choosing what color to serve can be kind of fun. With small children, allowing them to draw and color meals can encourage them to try some different things. Once they get hooked, they are far more likely to develop a taste for more kinds of foods. As a result, they may make better choices as they grow older.
