Are You Using Toxic Beauty Products?

By Sara Butler

You care about your health, and you try to make good choices when it comes to your diet, your exercise regimen, and even the products you use around your house. But toxic chemicals that can have a big impact on your health are lurking everywhere, so you have to be diligent to avoid them. The beauty products you might have in your bathroom could be harming you. Here are some of the toxic things to be on the lookout for when it comes to your beauty products.

Moisturizer

Facial moisturizers can contain something called parabens. These preservatives are not good for you and have been linked to increased risk of developing breast cancer, so beware! If you still want to moisturize daily, try to find an all-natural moisturizer without parabens to keep your skin glowing without the chemicals.

Deodorant

The word “fragrance” in your personal care products should be a big red flag. You can find this ingredient in most conditioners, lotions, shampoos, skin toner, body washes, and deodorants. Adding fragrances can cause respiratory problems in a lot of people since they’re a known irritant.

Going without deodorant may not be an option if you want to stay friends with people, but you can find organic deodorants without fragrance (or at least with natural fragrance) that are a better option.

Nail Polish

The way nail polish smells should be a dead giveaway that it’s not great for you, but applying them to your body can be a big problem. They contain something called triphenyl phosphate, which has been found to be an endocrine disruptor. These products are being studied and may increase your risk of problems with your reproductive system and put you at a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

If you love colorful nails too much to give it up, try using an organic nail polish without toxic additions.

Shampoos

So, you’ve got it covered when it comes to makeup and lotions, but what about shampoos? Many shampoos contain chemicals that soak into your body right through your scalp, such as formaldehyde.

If you want to get rid of the chemicals but still want soft and silky hair, try an organic shampoo or try your hand at making your own – that’s what Pinterest is for!

You need to take serious steps to get toxic chemicals out of your life, so be diligent and remember that you’re doing it for your health!
