Daily Habits that Sabotage Your Health

By Sara Butler

You know that smoking and trans fats are bad for your health, sure -- but not everything that impacts your health negatively is quite as intuitive. In fact, you probably participate in a few activities each day that are dangerous to your health and wellness and you may not even know it. If you do any of these things on a consistent basis, then it’s time to retrain yourself in order to be healthier in the long run!

Staying Up Too Late

Yes, you’re an adult now, which means you say when it’s time to go to bed. But part of being an adult is understanding how sleep impacts your health. If you don’t get enough of it consistently, then you may suffer some adverse effects in the short term and lingering effects in the long term -- things such as a higher risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

You should endeavor to go to bed at about the same time each night and wake up at about the same time each morning. That way, you can ensure you’re well rested and ready to tackle the day -- even on the weekends!

Watching Too Much Television

Being a Netflix-binging couch potato isn’t healthy for you, but you probably already know that. While that behavior is bad for your body, it’s known that television is also bad for your mind. Studies have found that watching television for three or more hours per day over the course of several years has a lasting impact on cognitive function.

The cure? Instead of watching television, get out and be active. It’ll be good for your brain and your body, helping you to have more energy overall. So much energy that you may not even feel like plopping down on the couch after a day at the office.

Meal Skipping

Three squares a day is what you know you should be having, but most people simply aren’t eating frequently enough. Many people skip breakfast or lunch and that’s way more harmful than you may have thought.

It’s important to understand that skipping meals doesn’t mean you’re skipping calories. In fact, skipping meals often results in eating more calories overall since you tend to go a little overboard to make up for the meals you missed.

The solution is to make time for your meals and work in a few snacks too. Eating regularly is good for your body!

Good health is something you must work on, so start by correcting these bad habits!
