Making the Most Out of Your Daily Walk

By Stepy Kamei

These days, we're learning how to find joy and comfort in the simplest things. How many of us would be happy to simply go out once a day for a short stroll around the neighborhood? Now, going for a daily walk is the one highlight of our day. However, the good news is that going for walks is an activity that's highly beneficial to our overall health and well-being. Walks have been shown to improve heart health and reduce stress by providing a low-impact form of exercise.

Still, if the idea of going for a walk bores you, keep on reading to learn more about what walking can do to improve your health -- and how you can incorporate even more healthy habits for better and more interesting walks.

Take a Stroll Outside

Going outside for some fresh air is a great way to boost your mood. Studies have shown that even just 15 minutes of exposure to natural sunlight and/or greenery can greatly improve feelings of positivity, not to mention reduce feelings of stress and fatigue as well. As long as the weather permits, be sure to get outside during the day!

Practice Mindfulness

If you're experiencing heightened levels of stress (and most of us are these days), consider practicing simple mindfulness techniques during your walks. Be sure to engage all of your senses; notice how the sun feels on your skin, the shade of green in the trees overhead, the sound of your feet on the grass or pavement below, and the smell of the air around you. This simple practice can help you stay grounded in the present moment, thereby reducing stress and anxiety.

Mix It Up

If you find you're getting bored during your walks, consider trying different paths every day! Go in a different direction, or follow a different street for a few blocks. The novelty of a new location may be enough to inspire you to stretch your legs further.

Have Some Company

Finally, if you're able to responsibly do so, have a friend, loved one, or dog accompany you on your walks! It can help make the time pass faster, so you might get in more exercise than if you were to go by yourself. Plus, it's a great way to bond with someone close to you (or your pet) while getting in some exercise.
