How to Avoid Back Pain While Teaching

By Brandi Swieter

When it comes time for school to start, many are focusing on keeping students free from pain. Heavy backpacks carried around, and sitting at a desk all day, can quickly lead to aches and discomfort. Though all of this true, it’s typically the teachers who seem to suffer the most. Standing for hours on end instructing students is an even faster way to find oneself in pain. With some tips for teachers, back pain on the job can be avoided, or at least reduced.

Stand With a Stool

Teachers should never just stand at the front of the class in one place. Instead, they should use a stool as a means to prop up one foot and ease some of the discomfort that comes from standing upright for extended periods. Switch off every few minutes so each foot takes a turn resting on the stool for a proper balance.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

High heels or flats are never the right footwear choice for teachers. With hours spent on their feet, instructors should always wear comfortable shoes that will prevent the legs and feet from aching after standing in them too long. Shoes should be sturdy and supportive with adequate cushioning. Cushioned insoles can be added to a pair of shoes that aren’t quite as comfortable as they need to be.

Stretch Often

Especially in the morning before classes, and again after the day is done, teachers should stretch. This will ensure their bodies and joints are adequately prepared and flexible enough to take on the day. Those who start to feel discomfort throughout the day can add some extra stretches to help. Bending down to touch the toes, reaching up toward the sky and stretching the calves, and doing a quad stretch are all beneficial to help with pain from standing.

Use an Appropriately Sized Chair

Some teachers sit in a chair to teach, especially those who need to get on the same level as younger students. Sitting in a child-sized chair can cause serious discomfort, so it’s important that teachers never do so. Everyone should use an appropriately sized chair that fits their bodies well and is comfortable.

Any teachers, instructors, guest speakers, or anyone else responsible for standing in front of a crowd and providing insightful information, should follow these tips to avoid back pain. If any discomfort is still felt after a shift, it’s best to visit The Joint Chiropractic to find out what the problem may be. Joint restrictions may need to be removed so pain is eliminated.
