Signs You Need to Rest!
By Sara Butler
Staying active is one way to stay healthy and prevent injury to your back, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. It's important to recognize when you're toeing the line between not enough movement and too much when it comes to the continued health of your body and your back. Here are some signs the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic want you to be aware of that mean you may need to give it a rest and allow your body to heal.
You're Having Trouble Sleeping
If you're under stress or have some other issue that's keeping you up at night, then your body isn't getting the time it needs to rest and rejuvenate. That may mean that the pressure you place on it throughout the day, including exercise, isn't resolving at night while you sleep and may actually be getting worse.
Try to find some strategies to work into your nighttime routine that can help sleep to come. The chiropractors at The Joint suggest you turn off any electronic devices at least an hour before bed, create a cool, calm, and dark space to sleep in, and try a relaxing ritual before bed such as gentle stretching or a warm shower. If you need more guidance on things you can incorporate into your bedtime routine to help usher in the Sandman, talk to your chiropractor.
You Have Constant Aches and Pains
Any aches or pains that seem constant occur frequently should be taken as a sign that you're placing too much stress and strain on your body. When you exercise, your muscles are subject to tiny tears. The natural repair of these tears is how you increase your muscle strength, but if you're placing too much of a demand on your body, it may not be able to keep up. This results in aches and pains that feel nearly constant. Allow your body time to fully heal.
You're Irritable
Usually, exercise serves as a reliable way to boost your mood - unless you're doing too much of it. In this case, it may be a one-way ticket to Grumpytown, population one.
If you find that you're easily irritated, sad, tired, or angry more often than is normal for you, then it could be a sign your body is trying to tell you something important: It's time to take a load off. Whether that something is nutritious food, sleep, rest, or even a simple change of scenery, listen to what your body is trying to tell you in order to stay healthy and keep all the good that comes from regular exercise without all the nasty side effects.
