How to Fight Sugar Cravings

By Sara Butler

Sugar cravings can hit you hard -- and they can come out of nowhere! A sweet tooth can be a serious issue to contend with and can make all your best efforts at healthy eating go down the tubes. But there are some strategies you can use to help you kick your sugar cravings to the curb. Here are some of the best ways to battle your sugar cravings to fight back for your health and wellness.

Diversify

A diverse diet can help you to reduce your sugar cravings. That's because when you eat a diet that is balanced, your body is getting what it needs to be healthy. If you're missing out on other important nutrients, then you may find that your sugar cravings increase.

Make sure to get enough of every type of food in your meals. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats should take center stage. That way, you should get enough of what you need to help you feel satisfied after meals and reduce your cravings in the process.

Never Skip a Meal

Making sure you don't go hungry is another way to help reduce your sugar cravings. When you skip a meal, you're more likely to look to foods that provide a quick source of energy for a pick me up (hello candy bar). When you get overly hungry, or hangry, you might reach for foods that are less than nutritious too simply to rescue your dropping blood sugar.

You should make sure you're getting well-balanced and frequent meals throughout the day. Have healthy snacks on hand too that are high in protein and fiber, such as peanut butter and crackers, to help you maintain all day.

Go For Natural Sweetness

Naturally sweet foods can help with sugar cravings too. Instead of candy, you should reach for something that is sweet but nutritious, such as trail mix with nuts, dried fruit, and dark chocolate. Snacks like this can be carried with you no matter where you go and can also fill you up while giving you the hint of sweetness you crave.

Drink Plenty of Water

Another pitfall that can lead to increased sugar cravings is dehydration. If you drink enough water each day, then you won't mix up being thirsty with being hungry. If you feel like you're hungry, a good rule of thumb is to drink a glass of water and then wait a few minutes. If you're still hungry, have a snack, but if you aren't, then chances are it was dehydration trying to fool you.

Sugar cravings can be overcome. Just stick with healthy eating and you'll come out on top.
