It's Almost Flu Season: Are you Ready?

By Virginia Laird

While fall is one of my favorite seasons, it also causes a moment's pause as I hurriedly try to prepare myself and my family to begin fighting the flu germs. For some, getting the flu vaccine can be helpful in preventing the virus from taking over your home. However, there are many who choose to forgo this option, as it still cannot prevent the flu entirely. Each year there are many who report getting the flu shot and falling ill with it. For this reason, healthcare professionals suggest a few good hygiene practices to apply in your home to help keep these germs away. These tips include:

  • Wash your hands often
  • Stay home when you are ill
  • Make hydration a priority

Wash Your Hand Often

Hand washing is the first line of defense when it comes to preventing the flu. Every place you go, you touch items that others have also handled. This passes germs easily. Healthcare experts say that there is no limit to the amount of times you should wash your hands each day. However, if you find that you are washing less than seven times daily, it may not be enough. You should be washing before handling food, after using the restroom, after coming in contact with others, and much more.

Stay Home When You Are Ill

Do yourself a favor and stay home when you are ill. While you may not be suffering with the flu, when you are ill, the body is more vulnerable to other illnesses. Healthcare experts say that those who are ill should get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and choose a healthy diet. Following this advice can help your immune system fight off illness in the best way possible. Don't be afraid to call in sick the next time you are ill, your coworkers will be glad you decided not to bring them your germs.

Make Hydration a Priority

The body struggles to function properly when it is not hydrated appropriately, this includes the immune system. Healthcare experts constantly preach the value of consuming plenty of water as a means to promote good overall wellness. It is recommended that everyone consume at least half of their body weight in ounces of water water on a daily basis. For those who prefer other beverages to water, it is imperative that you begin learning to love water. Start today making water a priority.

There is no time to waste when it comes to preventing the flu. Start today doing all you can to keep germs away and your family healthy.
