Why Eating That Dessert Just Isn't Worth It

By Genevieve Cunningham

So many people look forward to the wonderfulness that is dessert. Half of the fun of eating a meal is knowing that something sweet and delicious is coming at the end. But when it comes to eating a healthy diet, is savoring dessert such a good idea? Unfortunately, the answer is probably not. If you love saving room for dessert, but you also want to be as healthy as possible, take a look at these reasons why dessert may not be worth it after all.

Because Those Calories Count

Like it or not, every calorie that you consume counts toward your daily total. And most desserts have a lot of calories. This means that you have less room for the healthy foods such as veggies, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins. Not only will you be consuming less of the good stuff, but you’ll also be consuming more of the bad stuff such as unhealthy fats and sugar. If you believe in the power of calorie in and calorie out, avoiding dessert is the most logical option.

Because Sugar is Addictive

We don’t like to think about it or admit it, but sugar is quite an addictive substance. The more you eat, the more you want to eat. And unfortunately, most desserts are packed full of this delicious, addictive, unhealthy substance. If you want to be healthy and maintain a good weight, it’s important to watch your sugar intake. Desserts, because of their high sugar and calorie content, are a great place to cut back.

Because the Habit is Hard to Break

Dessert is a habit. We look forward to it. We think about it and anticipate the deliciousness. But once a habit is established, it’s really hard to break. Go ahead and cut the habit form your life right now. This will allow you to create a newer, healthier habit in its place. Perhaps you have a cup of green tea after dinner or read a book with a glass of lemon water. Once you break the habit, everything becomes a lot easier. Break this habit now, and it will be easier to maintain a healthy diet and body in the future.

Who doesn’t love a good dessert? We all do! We love to make it, eat it, and share it with those that we love. But sometimes, we have to lose the things that we love in order to protect our health, and unfortunately, dessert is definitely one of these things. Quit eating dessert or cut back as much as you can, and you’ll probably notice an improvement in your health in no time at all.
