Health Benefits of Oatmeal

By Brandi Swieter

With National Oatmeal Cookie Day falling to the end of April, it’s worth taking a look at all the reasons oatmeal is so popular on many health experts’ lists. The oat grains used to make the favorite breakfast treat, and cookie flavor, contain high amounts of fiber and antioxidants. Those are just two of the health benefits provided by oatmeal, with many more available.

It Contains Manganese

Oats contain plenty of manganese. This nutrient is essential for for many functions within the body. It works to help form connective tissues and bones while also metabolizing carbohydrates and fat. It also regulates blood sugar and helps the brain function. With this nutriment found in oats, there’s already plenty of benefits to be experienced.

Antioxidant Properties

Antioxidants are often heard to fight disease. While this is one function, they also assist with several other operations within the body. Many of the antioxidants found in oats work to lower blood pressure. They promote healthy blood flow thanks to the increased dilation of blood vessels. There are also anti-itching effects and anti-inflammatory results. Avenanthramides are the main antioxidants found in oats, which are almost solely found in this food and not many others. Oats also contain an antioxidant known as ferulic acid, giving the health food more fighting power.

Soluble Fiber

Oats contain plenty of soluble fiber. This type is highly beneficial for gut health, allowing good bacteria to grow and keep the digestive system running smoothly. It also helps people feel full for longer since it takes longer to digest. Eating a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast is a far better alternative to most cereals. The beta-glucan fiber within oats also helps to reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels, making it good for the heart.

Weight Loss

Because oats are filling to the body, people tend to experience weight loss when consuming them regularly. Oatmeal, granola bars made with oats, and other oat foods should all be eaten more often if people are looking to lose some weight. People will feel full longer and have no need to consume empty calories they may have otherwise taken in shortly after eating other meals.

Rather than another flavor, opt for an oatmeal cookie instead. Homemade versions are especially healthier while still offering a sugary treat that many can’t resist. Eat oatmeal for breakfast as well for a healthy start to the day. There’s plenty of benefits to take advantage of regularly.
