How to Focus More on Health in the New Year

By Brandi Goodman

Your health should be your focus in the new year. Too many people are letting both their physical and mental well-being be placed on the back-burner. It's time to start thinking more about how you can get your mind right and feel better physically so you can lead your best life possible.

Make One Change at a Time

Telling yourself you're getting to eat clean, exercise daily, get more sleep, and avoid stress puts too much pressure on you all at once. These are all great goals to strive for but they shouldn't be done at the same time. You need to make just one change at a time until you're comfortable with it. Then you can start on the next step until you've achieved everything you wanted.

Plan Your Rewards

Making changes to your health aren't always easy. Plan out rewards for yourself so you have something to look forward to and stay motivated. If you actually exercised all week and met your goals, treat yourself to a new shirt that you feel great in. Maybe you're trying to quit smoking and you made it through a whole day without. Spend the $6 you saved on not buying a pack and get the ingredients for a relaxing bath soak at home.

Set Yourself Up for Success

If you've been a junk food junkie all your life and you're now trying to eat healthy, for example, it can be hard to let some of your cravings go. You can't say you want to eat better and then keep junk food everywhere. You need to set yourself up for success. Get a food journal. Stock up your fridge and cupboards with healthy snacks. Pick some options that are better for you but still closely resemble your favorites from before. If you prepare yourself for the goal you're attempting to reach you're more likely to achieve it.

Write Your Goal Down and Share it With Others

Just telling yourself you're going to achieve this goal isn't usually enough to make it happen. You should write your goal down so you hold yourself more accountable. Share it with others as well so you feel a bit of an obligation to really continue striving for it. You'll know there's others watching and want to do better.

Focus on your health in the new year with some tips in mind. You want to be the best version of yourself possible -- healthy, happy, and thriving -- so you can have the energy and ability to do what you want with your life. You matter.
