How Hiking Can Transform Your Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

It's fall, which means it's a great time to get outside. The weather is cool and fresh and exciting. And because it feels so good outside, it's a great time to take your exercise outdoors, too! But what kind of exercise can you do outside? Sure, you can run or take a walk  but what if you want something in the middle of these two? Something harder than a walk but not as taxing as a run? If this sounds like something you might like, it might be time to try hiking. To help you get fit in a fun way this season, take a look at how hiking can transform your health for good.

It Gets You Outside

This is obvious, but the positive effects of getting outdoors go missed by too many. The great outdoors helps us get some Vitamin D, some fresh air, and helps stabilize our moods. It's crucial that we get time outside, and taking on the task of hiking helps us do just that. If you're interested in not only going outside, but learning to love it as well, then hiking is an excellent choice.

It Teaches Us Valuable Skills

Hiking is work. And what many don't realize is that hiking requires you to think and use your critical thinking skills. Depending on your trail, you may have to navigate steep paths, rocks, trees and limbs, or even animals. To do this, you'll have to learn all you can about the terrain, the wildlife, and basic survival skills. And these are valuable skills to add to your list for use in future situations.

It's a Workout

Hiking is tough! It requires all of our muscles to work. It improves our stamina. It's an excellent way to get fit! And the best part is that many people don't even notice the workout vibe. They get so caught up in nature and the challenge that they ignore how hard their bodies are working and how much their fitness level is changing for the better.

Hiking is fun and challenging and a great hobby to add to your life. Buy some shoes, find a trail, get a buddy, and go! You may find that hiking provides a great way to get fit, challenge yourself, and stay engaged in nature and life for the rest of your life.
