Staying Fit As You Age: Is It Even Possible?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Being fit and healthy is a top goal for the majority of people. We like the way it feels to have a healthy, strong, toned body. It feels good in both body and mind. When we're young, this goal is often met with ease. Maybe we don't have the perfect body, but we certainly have one that we're proud of. But as we age, keeping a fit body becomes a bit more difficult. In fact, we often begin to wonder if it's even possible. So what's the deal? Can we really be fit as we grow older? Or should we begin to focus our attention elsewhere? If you're interested in staying in tip-top shape no matter your age, take a look at what you need to know to make it happen.

Flexibility and Strength are Key

As we get older, flexibility and strength are among the first things to go. We just aren't as limber. Our muscles aren't quite as toned. And because of this natural decline, it's crucial that we focus on these areas of our health. Make sure you keep up a stretching routine that helps you stay flexible. Make sure you're lifting weights to maintain your strength. You may not be able to keep the strength and flexibility of your youth, but it will definitely make a huge difference to your overall fitness goals.

Adjust Your Goals

It's just not a good idea to have the same fitness goals at every age. Your body at 25 will be much different than your body at 55 or 75. It's normal to change. Allow your goals to change with you. Do you really need perfect sculpted abs on your 60th birthday? If you can manage it, great! But if you can't, don't sweat it. Instead, set a goal for a strong core. Set a goal of weight maintenance. Set a goal to feel good in your own skin instead of a particular number on the scale. If you adjust your goals as you age, it will be easier to measure and find true success.

Remember Your Diet

Diet is the biggest factor in our health. Yes, exercise is important. But if you're not eating well, you won't see the progress that you want to see. Your diet should be full of vegetables and fruit and lean protein. If you focus on your diet as you age, it can also help ward off problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and other serious issues. Diet should be at the top of your priority list, so get informed and you'll be setting yourself up for long-term wellness.

It's definitely not impossible to stay in good shape as you age. Yes, your body will change. Certain things will become harder. But with the right attitude and the right plan, you can definitely find success. Use these tips to guide your way, and you'll be on your way to good health in no time at all.
