Summertime Life: How to Keep Healthy
By Virginia Laird
I have always been excited when summer gets here, and life as a parent is no different. In my home, summer is a time to loosen up. We tend to stay up a little later, eat a little more junk, and squeeze as much fun as possible into each day. While our choices are the same as millions across the nation, some of them may not be the healthiest. Health and wellness experts advise that staying healthy in summer should include sticking fairly close to routine. These same experts offer a few other tips, including:
- Never skip a meal
- Put down the soda and drink more water
- Stop smoking right away
Never Skip a Meal
While some may choose to skip meals in an effort to control calorie consumption, this has the opposite effect. Skipping a meal can cause overeating later in the day. Many who skip a meal become starving prior to the next meal and reach for whatever can be found to satisfy their hunger. Rather than choosing to miss a meal, health and wellness experts advise that eating small meals throughout the day is better for your metabolism.
Put Down the Soda and Drink More Water
Research suggests far too many indulge in soda, rather than water. Health and wellness experts advise that soda is full of sugar and calories that offer little to no nutrition. If you are a consumer of diet soda, you may be avoiding the sugar of a regular one, but you are still consuming harmful chemicals. If you are really serious about improving your health, giving up soda is one sure way to make this happen.
Stop Smoking Right Away
With all the warnings surrounding smoking, it is a shock (to me) that so many choose to begin this habit. Health and wellness experts warn that smoking can increase blood pressure and cause other health-related issues. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. Those who are sincere about their desire to improve their health should kick this habit immediately.
Keeping healthy in the summer can prove to be a challenge for some. For those who need a little help making sure to stay healthy this summer, it is wise to begin putting some of these tips to work in your life right away.
