Lifetime Sports May Mean Lifetime Health

By Tom Herrin

When most of us were younger, it was pretty easy to be active.  We spent lots of time playing.  Running and being generally active is kind of the name of the game for kids.  As we got older, our busy lives may have gotten a little bit in the way of physical activity.  Once we realize that we are in need of some kind of exercise, it may seem to be a pretty significant challenge to get ourselves going and back into activity.  While some people really enjoy routine exercising, others dread every minute of it.  There are good ways to accomplish the goal of more activity without doing something that makes you feel like it is an unpleasant chore.  Lifetime sports may make a world of difference.

Goals for Physical Activity

Anytime we begin a program of physical activity, it is important to have some objectives.  What are we trying to do?  Determining some kind of a goal can help us actually achieve it.  A general guide is often to get 30 minutes per day on at least five days per week of moderate exercise.  This may help to build overall conditioning as well as burn calories.  Too many times, our enthusiasm overcomes us, and we go too hard, too fast.  We probably got out of shape slowly.  We are likely better off to get back into shape slowly as well.  Slow, steady progress can be the best kind.

What Kind of Activities Fit You?

All activities are not made for all people.  If you are social, you may prefer a team, or group, activity.  There are all kinds.  Bowling, jogging clubs, exercise groups, and other such are pretty well-suited for those who enjoy the company of others while they are exercising.  If you want to spend time with a companion at the same time, you may want to try some kind of dancing.  It can provide some pretty good exercise as you will find out after spending an hour or so doing it.  If you are more of an individual in your activities, there are plenty of those, too.  Some enjoy things such as biking out on your own.  For others, hiking is a great activity.

Decide How Hard You Want to Go

As you get into being active, you may decide to turn up the effort to another notch.  That is fine as long as you build up to it.  Running long distance runs or biking for lots of miles can be satisfying for many.  Others like returning to heavier involvement in competitive activities they may have done in the past.  There are adult leagues for basketball, soccer, softball, and lots of others.  Make a choice, and get involved.
