Lifetime Sports May Boost Health

By Tom Herrin

When we think about getting the kind of exercise we all know we need, it can be difficult to make any real progress.  In our minds, we may see hours of a pretty boring routine.  Unless you are one of those who thrive on the methodical, the thought of endless repetitions each day just doesn't have much appeal.  On the other hand, there is a way to get some really good regular exercise while enjoying yourself.  Participating in some kind of lifetime sport may be all it takes.  You may not have taken up one yet, but there are lots of choices out there.

What Is the Idea of Lifetime Sports

As younger children, many of us participated in some kind of sport.  The question may be just what makes something a lifetime sport?  The term speaks for itself.  Some years ago, many school physical education programs began to emphasize lifetime sports.  The intent was to introduce children to some kind of physical activity they could participate in for the rest of their lives.  It could be anything, but some may be played regardless of age and physical condition.  If we can keep playing, we may be able to maintain a healthier body.  By the nature of sports, we may be more motivated to do something that we can do and make personal progress.

How Much Activity Do We Need?

A generally accepted guide for activity is to get 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times per week.  If we shoot for that amount, we should be able to have a reasonable amount of cardio workout.  Building up our heart is the key to a healthy body.  If we are not able to comfortably do that much exercise, it never hurts to start with only a few minutes at a time and slowly build up.  If you are persistent and challenge yourself a little at a time, you will make good progress in no time.

Pick a Sport That Fits You

When you begin to look for a sport, you have lots to consider.  If you like something in small groups, you may enjoy golf, bowling, hiking, or something similar.  If you want something more social, you may prefer adult league basketball, softball, or dancing.  You will surely find something that fits your needs.  Once you do, you may be surprised at how much you enjoy it.
