Bicycling Can Be Low Stress With Great Results

By Tom Herrin

As we begin to move into the spring, many of us look for ways to improve our health and become active.  There are plenty of activities out there.  If you are like a lot of us, you start to take a little more consideration for how fit you are now and what effect exercise will have on your body while you are trying to get into shape.  How long has it been since you have been on a bicycle?  If the last time you got on one was to show your kids how to ride, it has probably been too long.  Bicycling can be one of most effective ways to improve your health without spending a small fortune.

Biking Is Great For Overall Conditioning

A great thing about riding a bicycle is that you can do it at your own pace.  There is nothing wrong with starting slowly.  A good idea is to start by riding for a distance that barely tires you.  You can do 10 minutes or a mile.  You will be able to increase your time or distance pretty quickly.  You only have to set goals and pace yourself.  Your ultimate goal should be to ride at least 30 minutes per day at least three times a week.  It is a wonderful, low stress way to build up your endurance and improve your cardiovascular system.  It is also good for those who have injured knees, ankles, and any other such body parts.  You can work them out without placing excessive weight on them.

It Is Environmentally Friendly

If you live any place where you are within a few miles of town, biking is a great way to get around without buying gas.  I try making small trips for items I forgot at the grocery store or making trips to the post office.  It isn’t hard to find ways to ride a bike somewhere you need to go.  Some people even manage to ride their bikes to work.

A Few Other Perks

There is almost a grocery list of things you can gain from bike riding.  It is a pretty easy way to control your weight.  It can help relieve stress and provide an opportunity for you to socialize by riding with a friend or family member.  You can get bikes for a pretty affordable price.  If you are just starting out, get one that is reasonably priced, get basic gear like a helmet, and be sure to get a comfortable seat.  Once you really get started enjoying the outdoors with this low stress exercise, you will look forward to going every chance you get.
