Using the Brain for Languages May Bump up Health

By Tom Herrin

Most people know what happens with standard health practices.  Diet, exercise, and a few other things all generally have a positive effect on health.  Good activities, however, are not limited to only those.  Another thing that may be done is for people to learn a new language.  It is certainly something that can be a pretty good test for those who make the effort, but it is a way of doing something good for health while broadening their knowledge base far beyond that which they currently have.  It is certainly a creative way to boost health.

Obtaining New Language Skills May Help Math Ability

When people make the effort to learn new languages, it is generally believed that it can help the brain to function at a higher level.  Studies from both the University of Massachusetts and the University of Michigan have shown that students who are learning languages also perform better in math as they appear to have greater abilities.  The latter study was on students who studied a new language for only 90 minutes during a semester.  Both came to the same conclusion, and that is that the participants gained in their math skills.

Learning New Languages Benefit the Attention Span

Many people today seem to have issues with their attention spans.  Many are labeled due to their problems.  It is unfortunate that many have to take medications as a result.  A study from York University indicated that those who switch from one language to another appear to have greater control over their attention span.  It may be due to the fact that they must master their focus on more than one thing.  A study from Pompeu Frabra University in Spain found that those who must make this adjustment are able to have better focus and identify those things in their environment that are significant.

Crank up the Brain

Most of us could stand some real work on using our minds.  It is always easiest to take the path of least resistance, and we often choose it.  If we want to improve ourselves, we may want to get out of our comfort zones.  Learning, or just studying, a new language can do much for anyone.  Whether it is improving math or memory, it can be a good thing, and we may do more than simply broaden our communication skills.
