Good Practices Can Assure Good Health

By Tom Herrin

All of us have the ability to protect our health.  Many times, we can do so by forming good habits, or practices, that can help us to do a constant check-and-balance.  As our average age has increased, we have all had to be more concerned about things that are related to problems that are more related to aging.  It is a good thing as it can help each of us to enjoy life more fully.  There are several things we can do as part of these good practices.

Screenings Are Important

In our present day of high technology, screenings are available in all kinds of areas.  Colonoscopies are usually recommended for most people at age 50.  The suggestion is generally to do so every 10 years.  Skin cancer screenings are much more common today; most preventative treatment is simple.  Many other kinds have become increasingly popular as well.  A blood pressure screening is one that has been encouraged for many for several years and is available at many pharmacies and other such locations.  When you can check your easily, there is little excuse to fail to do that.

Wear the Right Clothes

We are not referring to a style contest when we talk about dress.  Dressing right, for health, means that we need to know when to wear light loose-fitting clothes that allow movement in the warm weather.  A hat with a brim is important when you will be spending much time in the sun.  It is also critical for us to wear shoes that provide the right kind of support for the occasion.  Style is often, in this case, one of the worse things to base a decision on.  It is also helpful to seek shade whenever possible.  Not only can it keep us cooler, but it can add more protection from the sun.

Be Part of Something

Involvement is a good way to strengthen ourselves from within.  A good social life can make us happier and healthier.  The spirit of volunteerism can be very addictive.  Once we start, we may find ourselves connecting with others more easily.  When we have a cause, we may be more motivated.  When we have some responsibility, we may feel that someone else is counting on us, we may have more opportunity to work with others.  This feeling of belonging can be good for all and can bring a feeling of real satisfaction.
