Prioritize Your Health During Summer

By Donna Stark

Summer is a time to head outdoors, go on vacation, and watch your favorite bands play under the night sky. It's a time filled with casual and relaxed joy, but unfortunately, some of us become a little too casual with our health. Taking care of your body may not be at the top of your list during all of your fun, summer events, but it should be. You see, too much of a good thing can be hazardous to your health, which is why it is important to take certain precautions before you leave your home. Take a look at a few of the most common mistakes people make during the summer.

Wearing Flip-Flops All the Time

Both men and women can be seen choosing flip-flops over other types of shoes during the summer, and even though they certainly have their place in many situations, they aren't the best option out there. Day-to-day wear can easily result in foot, knee, and back pain because flip-flops simply don't offer enough arch support for the wearer.

Tanning Before the Start of Summer

Gotta get that base, right? Understandably, some people may want to start summer with a gorgeous tan, but what they're actually doing is increasing their risk of skin cancer. Studies show that those who use a tanning bed before the age of 35 significantly increase their risk of melanoma. Remember, cancer never looks good on a person, even with a tan, so think twice about doing that before you do it.

Eating Foods That Have Been Sitting Out

Those days at the beach, the picnics in the park ... so many of us prefer to eat outside during the summer season, but you have to know the basics on food storage and safety before you do so! Food poisoning incidents peak in the summer because bacteria love the warmer weather as much as we do. To avoid the risk, put your food away and back in the refrigerator as soon as possible after everyone has eaten.

Drinking Water Only When You're Thirsty

You've heard it said plenty of times and for the most part, it sounds easy enough, but do you drink enough water consistently throughout the day? No? Well, it's time to make a change because if you only rely on those feelings of thirst to remind you to drink water, you are going to be dehydrated. And then, you are going to increase your risk of being in trouble. Dehydration is more dangerous than most people may realize and can lead to serious health complications. So don't play games. Just drink your water!

Enjoying Your Summer

Don't let these common mistakes ruin your summer! Make wise choices, prioritize your health, and enjoy this time with your loved ones. It's going to be over quicker than you realize!
