A Stress-Free Fall Break Is Possible!
By Donna Stark
Fall break is just around the corner and for many families that means it is time to hit the road. Whether you are traveling to see the change in color on the leaves or heading to Disney for some Halloween fun, it's always good to leave your stressful life at home and get away with those you love. So why then, do you allow that stress to follow you? Sure, traveling with children can definitely bring on the stress, but if you plan ahead and prepare for the worst, that stress can be minimized! Here are some tips to help keep your fall break as stress-free as possible.
Leave the Stress at Home
It is in our children's DNA to increase the levels of stress around us, but that doesn't mean you can't at least reduce some of it just long enough to enjoy a family vacation. Take a look at the following suggestions. They are sure to help, no matter where your final destination is.
- Pack extra clothes - It's inevitable. If you have kids, you are going to have spills and if you have a baby, you can pretty much guarantee some drool or spit up will make an appearance. So save yourself some grief and pack some extra clothes, not only for your kids but for you as well.
- Schedule some extra time - Give yourself some extra time for additional stops whether on the road or in the air. You know that the restroom requests will be nonstop and the bickering with each other will be never-ending, so give everyone a breather and take breaks when needed. Let your kids go to the restroom for the one-hundredth time and give them space to shake the crazies out. It's OK because you gave yourself that extra cushion in time.
- Pack medicine - Have you ever needed to make that call to friends asking them to break into your home and overnight the medicine you need? You haven't? Well, I have and it's not fun. So make sure that you have all of the prescription medications your family requires and pack some of the common over-the-counter medications your family uses too!
- Bring entertainment - Now, you don't need to get too fancy with this one. Just remember to pack any electronic devices, baby toys, books, and other items of the sort to keep your kiddos entertained during the drive or flight. By keeping them busy, you will be able to squash a lot of the bickering too!
Enjoying Your Trip
Hopefully, after reading the suggestions above, you can really start to look forward to a stress-free vacation over fall break! And it couldn't come at a better time. After all, you have more stress coming with of all the winter holidays right around the corner!
