Why Your Water Intake Matters More Than You Think

By Genevieve Cunningham

Water. Literally everyone knows that water is a staple of life. We can't live without it, and we've heard all the advice about drinking more. Drink at least eight glasses per day. Drink more to lose weight. Drink a glass before every meal. But even with the constant advice, many of us still refuse to increase our consumption. But water is so very important -- even more important than we think. Why? If you're ready to get serious about your health and wellness, take a look at these reasons why your daily intake matters plus some tips for drinking more.

Hydration Affects Everything

We think we know how water makes us feel, but we don't. We know how a certain amount of water makes us feel, but since we're all slightly dehydrated most of the time, we don't truly understand what it's like to be fully and consistently hydrated. If you ever get to this place in your health, you may notice better skin, faster digestion, shiny hair, and even more mental clarity. Water literally affects everything. If you want to feel healthy from top to bottom, drinking more water is necessary.

Water Keeps You Full

Another benefit of more water is that it keeps you feeling full. And the more full your stomach feels, the less food you're going to fill it with. Eventually, this can lead to weight loss. Though you would still need to pair this with a healthy diet, drinking more water can definitely help you be successful in your weight loss journey.

Tips for More Water

  • Carry a water bottle - If water is always handy, you're more likely to drink it. Choose a bottle that's easy to carry, and keep it full.

  • Set a timer - If you really can't remember to sip on water, set a timer on your phone. Every time it sounds, take a drink. Soon it will be habit without the need for the alarm.

  • Avoid other drinks - Sometimes we don't drink water because we're filling our stomachs with other drinks. If this is a problem for you, try to avoid other drinks. No sodas. No sugary coffee. Drink water as much as you can instead.

It's not enough to know about the need for water. We actually have to follow through! We have to consume more water and less junk. Make it a priority in your diet and in your life, and you'll see changes in your health that make you feel and function better every single day.
