Chiropractic Advice for Saving Your Spine

By Brandi Goodman

Your spine is necessary for holding you up, and yet so few people take the time to really keep their spine aligned and feeling good. You need to save your spine now if you hope to maintain your balance and stability in the future. With some chiropractic advice, you can do just that.

Switch Your Sleeping Position

The way you sleep can greatly affect your spine. Sleep on your stomach and you're more likely to wake up in pain. You should sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees for added comfort. You may also want to opt for a new pillow and mattress. It's wise to replace your pillow yearly -- two years at the most. Your mattress needs replacing every eight years or so.

Find Supportive Shoes

Your shoes can also be the culprit for your back pain. You need a supportive pair that helps keep you on your feet. If you stand for hours at your job or your work involves walking then a sturdy pair of shoes will go a long way toward helping your spine feel fine. Flats and heels should never be worn because they do not provide the comfort and traction you need.

Get a Massage

A massage promotes better blood flow to the area and can help with tight muscles. If you notice your back or shoulders have been aching a lot lately, you may want to ask your significant other for a massage. You can also visit a massage parlor or purchase your own massage seat cushion for use whenever necessary.

Limit Sitting Time

Sitting for hours isn't great for your spine. This is especially true if you find yourself leaning or slouching while you sit. You should limit your sitting time and make sure you're getting up at regular intervals to stretch. Doing so can increase blood flow, prevent stiffness, and help ensure you aren't letting your health suffer from a fully sedentary lifestyle.

You should always do what you can to keep your spine health in mind. You need a strong spine to maintain balance and coordination as you age. Allow yours to weaken and you'll be aging your body far faster than you desire. Stop in at The Joint Chiropractic if you need an adjustment or further guidance. Prolonging the life of your spine is the goal.
