Yellow Foods May Make a Healthier Diet

By Tom Herrin

Most people know that a diet full of white foods can mean that the nutrients are limited.  It may be that they are heavy in starches and short on fibers. For those who may be prone to problems with their blood sugar, such diets can be difficult on their health.  Adding a variety of colors can mean that there will be a better range of nutrients and simpler digestive process. Many people seek to get more green in their diets, but too often people fail to add a color that can expand their nutrition and simplicity of digestion.

Yellow Foods Can Help Build Strong Bones

When a color is referred to as yellow, it may actually include orange, such as sweet potatoes and pumpkins.  Some of these contain a few major nutrients. Calcium and magnesium are two that are necessary for strengthening bones.  Consuming foods that have an adequate supply of these can increase bones mass. Many people today suffer from poor bone mass, so dealing with this problem in advance may head off issues related to it.

They May Protect Against Cardiovascular Disease

Many of these yellow foods contain little or no fats.  They may be able to lower bad cholesterol. Sweet potatoes, in particular, have a fair amount of soluble fiber.  This is known to remove many fats and bad cholesterol that can clog or narrow blood vessels. The Vitamin C and beta-carotene in some foods such as yellow squash can help prevent oxidation of cholesterol.  These in combination with a few other things can help to fortify the body against many of the things that lead to serious cardiovascular disease.

They Can Make a Good Contribution to a Low-Calorie Diet

Many of the yellow foods are very low in calories.  Yellow squash has only an average of 36 calories. You can eat your fill of these delicious vegetables and top off a healthy meal.  I like them baked, boiled, or fried. They are one of the only fried foods that I eat. Sweet potatoes are another yellow food that has a lot of other perks.  Look for some yellow foods that you can add to supplement your diet. You will enjoy the change from the ordinary foods you may have become used to and you may find that you will have a much easier time of weight management as well.
