5 Tips to Prevent Burnout

By Virginia Laird

After finding your workout groove it's common to periodically experience burnout. As with other things, it can be caused by having little change in routine. Once the newness and excitement of an exercise habit wears off, it is vital to map out a plan to help keep burnout at bay. Although there is little to be done to completely avoid the feeling, here are a few tips to help overcome the blase’ attitude and keep your fire lit.

Fuel Up on the Good Stuff

Maintaining your energy level has a lot to do with what you actually eat. Eating junk can make you feel like junk. It is important to make good, healthy choices when it comes to food. Eating right can assist your body in having more energy.

Take It Outside

When the four walls of the workout room start getting monotonous, don’t hesitate to take your workout outside. Getting a breath of fresh air can help rejuvenate your spirits. Changing your scenery can allow you to get excited about your workout.

Make a List

It is ideal to keep a list of workouts that make you feel powerful. These can work as a power song. Your favorite exercises can help push the workout blues out the door. As a list lover, this tip is my go-to. I love to try new workouts. When I find something I like, I tend to wear myself out on it for a bit. Being able to turn to my list helps me stay on track when I start to feel the burnout attack.

Leave Uplifting Notes

Before the grueling workout gets inside your head, make yourself a few notes to place around your home and office. These notes should be uplifting, maybe quotes that can make you feel good about your progress and encourage you to continue.

Utilize the Buddy System

There is a slight bit of magic in the buddy system. It is far too easy to stop working out when you are trying to do it alone. Having a friend or group friends to work out with and help hold you accountable can help to keep the workout fun.
