Vacationing the Healthy Way
By Donna Stark
Can you believe the end of summer is here? It seems like just yesterday we were all trying to fit into our bathing suits, doesn't it? But now, instead of trying to fit into a bikini or swimming trunks, we are trying to fit in one last vacation for the season. After all, it's the perfect time to do so. The kids have a few more days off before school starts and you have a couple extra vacation days to use. However, there are some things to consider before booking your trip, because no matter how great a vacation sounds right now, it still can wreak havoc on your body. Take a look at the following suggestions that will keep your vacation filled with good times and great health.
Keep Germs Away
There are a lot of surfaces you may end up touching and a lot of hands touching your suitcases, so be sure to follow these tips when traveling by air.
- Wash your hands after touching the bins in the security line
- Use a hand sanitizer before eating or touching your face
- Wipe your tray table and armrests on the plane with an antibacterial wipe
- Avoid placing your personal belongings in the back pocket of the seat in front of you
- Maintain a strong immune system before the trip with a healthy diet and daily exercise
- Load up on Vitamin C before you hit the road
Prioritize Sleep
As much fun as you may be having, don't sacrifice your sleep while on vacation because that can lead to sickness, increased stress, poor decision-making skills, and accidents. Try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, take short naps if needed, and if you are traveling far enough away, plan your first day around the jet lag you may end up experiencing.
Maintain Healthy Habits
Sure, vacations are meant for fun and the occasional indulgence, but remember, it is still possible to have too much of a good thing! So, be intentional with maintaining your normal, healthy habits. Aim to eat healthily, stay as physically active as you can, try to relax, eliminate your stress, and listen to your body for warning signs. It's also a good idea to pack a travel-sized case of first aid necessities just in case something goes wrong.
Vacationing the Healthy Way
There are plenty of ways you and your loved ones could end up feeling unwell during your trip, so make sure you plan for as many of them as possible! By prioritizing the safety and well-being of everyone who is going, you can ensure that your last trip of the season will be amazing!
