Moving Through Strong Emotions Healthfully

By Stepy Kamei

It's simply a fact of life that, at some point or another, we're going to experience a situation or event which provokes a strong emotional reaction out of us. Maybe it's getting cut off by a driver in traffic, or standing in a line with a crazy long wait time. When life hands us difficult situations, it can be just as difficult to get a handle on our emotional state and pass through the situation without harming our mental, or even physical, well-being. As it turns out, ignoring your emotional well-being can have serious consequences on your physical health over time, such as high blood pressure and insomnia. Here are some helpful tips you can rely on to encourage you to process your emotional state in a healthy and positive manner, for the sake of your overall well-being.

Practice Deep Breathing

This is a great tip to turn to in the moment of a stressful situation, as well as any other point during the day. When we get stressed or tense, we often tend to begin breathing shallowly and rapidly, usually without even realizing we're doing it. Taking the time to focus on your breath, rather than the current situation, can help you stay calm and grounded, and avoid letting your emotions get the better of you. Focus on taking slow, deep breaths to get through the most stressful part of a difficult situation.

Repeat a Mantra

Some people find that reciting a particular mantra can help them pass through a moment of rough emotions. You can try a few different phrases to see which ones seem to have the best impact on your mental state. Phrases such as, "I'm going to be OK," and "These uncomfortable feelings will pass soon" are good places to start.

Move

If possible, it may be best to physically move your body in a gentle manner. Get up and go for a short walk if you can. This will allow you to be removed from the situation and allow your body to release any stress or tension in a mindful and helpful manner.

Write It Out

Many health experts agree that expressing your emotions is better than bottling them up, but it's important to express yourself in a safe and healthy manner. Writing out your feelings in a diary can help you explore your emotional state in a positive and safe manner.
