Start Your Chiropractic Visit Right With Preparation

By Brandi Goodman

Sure, you can show up to the chiropractor without knowing what to expect. It may seem a little scarier for you than it should be if you do though. Start your chiropractic visit right with preparation. Knowing what to expect before your first visit and planning accordingly will help you make the most of your session as well as ease your mind.

Learn What to Wear

You can really wear anything you want to the chiropractor but some options are going to feel better than others once you're there. You won't be changing into a robe like you do at a typical doctor's office. The clothes you wear to the adjustment will be what you wear during your visit. For this reason you should be sure to pick something that's comfortable and allows you to move easily. It's probably best that you skip wearing short shorts, a skirt, or dress. You want to be covered and comfortable. Jeans and a sweatshirt may not be ideal either because they can constrict your movement and make it difficult to switch positions on the table. Bulky clothes can also make it hard for your chiropractor to get to the right spot on your body. Athletic wear works well.

Have Your Medical History Ready

Any injuries you've experienced or illnesses you've dealt with can alter your chiropractor's course of action. The treatment plan will be tailored to your specific circumstances. If you were in an accident and badly injured your back, for example, then more gentle manipulation techniques may be required. Have your medical history ready to provide to your chiropractor so the two of you can come to a safe conclusion about your care. He needs to know where and when your pain started if he's going to find a solution.

Drink Plenty of Water

The more flexible your joints are the better the adjustment will work. Stiff and sore joints may be hard to manipulate with certain techniques. Drink plenty of water before you can so your body is properly hydrated. It will make it more likely that you can get the adjustment you need. Be sure to continue drinking water after your session as well to keep your body feeling good.

It's always best to prepare for your chiropractic visit. You'll know what to expect before going in and your chiropractor will have to spend less time explaining it all to you once you're there. It can help to ease your nerves about a first-time visit and ensure you'll be able to make the most of every session.
