Do More Than Just Running

By Donna Stark

Want to work out more for better health? Are you thinking about heading out to your local sports store to purchase a new pair of running shoes? Well, if you are, you may want to reconsider your choice of exercise because running all the time might not be the best way to achieve your goals. In fact, if running is the only plan you have, you probably aren't going to be working on your strength, or anything else for that matter, as much as you should. But that's not the worst of it. You could be setting yourself up for overuse injuries, too. Take a look at why you should entertain the thought of doing other things as well.

Walking Is Just as Good

There are some distinct advantages that make walking just as appealing as running when it comes to fitness. Walking allows a person to achieve nearly the same results as running, but it does so in a way that is more "user-friendly." It is a low-impact workout that can be done anywhere, but the best part about it is the ability to spread it out over the course of the day. Brisk walking is best for your overall health and wellness, but if you aren't quite at that point yet, just start at a slower pace and build from there.

You Appreciate Your Joints

Just because you imagine your body is tough and strong, that doesn't mean it still isn't vulnerable to having its parts worn down. And if you choose to only run, you are putting your joints at an increased risk of injury. Unlike walking, running is extremely hard on your ankles, knees, and hips. It's important to switch things up a bit so your joints can get the break they need and so you can avoid injury, chronic pain, and permanent damage.

Life Requires Strength

Whether you are carrying your groceries in the door, picking up a baby, shoveling snow, or trying to avoid a fall, life requires a fair amount of strength, and you can't count on those cardio workouts to deliver that for you. You have to include some strength training exercises into your daily routine. If you don't know where to start, ask a professional trainer or search online for some ideas.

Running to Good Health

Don't get me wrong, running is still a good way to exercise, but it needs to be balanced out with other forms of fitness. The key idea here is to remember that all movement is good and that staying active in as many ways as you can should be at the top of your priority list!
