Do Essential Oils Really Work?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Essential oils are all the rage. More and more people are jumping on the essential oil bandwagon, whether it's selling or simply using the products on a regular basis. But with all of the hype, it's difficult to know whether essential oils really work. Do they? Or is it more hype than health? If you're interested in the essential oil boom, take a look at this quick guide to the effectiveness of using the oils in your life.

What Does Research Say?

There's not necessarily a lot of reliable research on essential oils. Why? Because there are usually so many other factors to consider when trying to determine effectiveness of these oils. The environment, health of users, reasons for use, origin of product, and a measure for effectiveness are all difficult things to pinpoint. Because of this, most claims of effectiveness or ineffectiveness are based on people's own reports.

Is It Placebo?

Those who are opposed to essential oils claim that anyone who sees positive results is simply experiencing the placebo effect. They want to believe it so badly, that they convince themselves that it works. But is it really just placebo? There are some positive reports around the idea of aromatherapy, which is essentially the same as essential oils. Those who claim that essential oils work really believe their effectiveness and shout their use from the rooftops. Could success stories actually be another claim for aromatherapy? Or is it the essential oils themselves doing the work? Is there even a difference? As long as the oils are doing the job, most people don't care how they work ... they just care that they feel better.

Does It Matter?

Perhaps the most important questions to ask is simply: Does it even matter? Whether placebo or not, any person who experiences positive side effects will claim effectiveness. And if that person feels better and their symptoms diminish, then the essential oils have technically done their job. If it works for you, there's no harm in continuing their use and improving your health even more.

Essential oils are definitely a hot commodity. More people than ever are discovering their many uses. If you're interested, give them a try! They come with only potential benefits and zero in the way of harmful risk. Use what works to keep you feeling good in your own skin, and you're that much closer to living a happy, healthy life from here on out.
