How to Make (and Stick With) a Micro-Resolution

By Stepy Kamei

We all have the best of intentions when it comes to making resolutions. Traditionally, we plan out a resolution at the start of a new year, but sometimes we find we want to commit to a new healthy habit at different stages of the year as well. Regardless of when you decide on a resolution you want to commit to, it can't be denied that sometimes it's hard to stick with it! That's at least partly because resolutions tend to be vague and overwhelming. This is why it might be a good idea to consider trying out "micro-resolution" instead! Keep on reading to learn more about what a micro- (or mini) resolution is, how you can establish one (or a few), and how they can benefit your overall health and well-being!

What is a Micro-Resolution?

Essentially, a micro-resolution is a small behavior or habit that you commit to partaking in for just four weeks. This makes your goals much more manageable and even attainable.

Rather than making some big, yet vague, goal such as "start working out again," a micro-resolution is much more focused, and therefore easier to work toward. For example, a micro-resolution related to fitness might be something like, "I will go for a 15-minute run around the block every other morning" or "I will put on a 5-minute yoga video to follow along with four mornings a week." These goals are specific and take up relatively little time. However, they can be much easier to follow and ultimately stick with. Try committing to at least one simple habit like this for only a four-week period and see how it goes! You may surprise yourself in wanting to continue the habit even after the four-week "trial period" is over.

Having Trouble Coming up With a Micro-Resolution?

There's no need to worry if you're having trouble coming up with a micro-resolution. If you're having trouble thinking of a habit to begin, it may help to instead think about a bad habit you'd like to cut back on, or cut out of your life entirely.

Maybe you want to cut back on the amount of sugar you consume. Your micro-resolution can be a one-month long commitment to substituting sugary foods with foods which are naturally sweet instead. For one month, instead of reaching for cookies and candy bars, make a snack out of fresh fruit slices drizzled with honey. At the end of the month, see how much you miss sugar, if at all!

You can always consult with your primary healthcare provider, a nutritionist, or a mental health professional for further advice on how to stick with a micro-resolution.
