Don't Hate Your Workouts
By Donna Stark
When I was growing up, hate was a word that we were not allowed to use. We could dislike things, we were even allowed to strongly dislike things, but hate? Nope. Not even lima beans. I could only ever assume what my parent's intentions were with having that rule because I never really challenged them on it. I just thought they were trying to promote everything but hate in our lives. As I have gotten older though, I have learned to appreciate a different perspective of not using that word, because in reality I have done the opposite, and it has gotten me nowhere. You see, I hate working out. There, I said it. I said it, loud and clear. I have used that word for far too long and it has brought me zero benefits. The only thing that word has done was to give me an excuse to not do what's right.
Is Hate Keeping You From Optimal Health?
Are there things about exercising that you strongly dislike? Is the deep animosity that you hold toward fitness keeping you from doing what's best for your body? Let's take a look at some common excuses and how you can get around them.
- Hate group classes? - Group classes are the perfect excuse for those who want to avoid working out because everyone else is in better shape, everyone else can keep up with the trainer, and everyone else will see you struggle. The truth? Everyone else started exactly where you are and that trainer can be a great motivator. If you feel uncomfortable, don't go at it alone. Invite a friend or two to join.
- Hate working out alone? - Working out alone can be tough, because if you can't push and motivate yourself to reach your goals, you may find it difficult to commit to. Again, invite a friend or spouse to join you or consider utilizing your gym's trainers.
- Hate repeats? - In addition to losing the effectiveness of your workouts, doing the same thing over and over again can become extremely boring! So keep your interest alive by switching up your routines, heading outdoors for something new, or signing up for an adult sports league.
- Hate not knowing? - Are your days so jumbled that you start your mornings not knowing which end is up? If you don't plan your workout or schedule it in your calendar, the not knowing of when you will get to exercise is all that is needed to lose interest. And when you lose interest, it doesn't happen. Avoid this pitfall by scheduling your workouts or making it become part of your daily routine.
Stop Hating and Start Doing!
Here's the deal. Hating your workouts isn't doing you any good and is more than likely keeping you from becoming your best. So let's stop using that word and start looking for ways around it! And who knows? You may even start to like working out!
