Celebrate Your Sleep Throughout the Year!

It is so easy to fall into the trap of leading a busy and stressed-out life, isn't it? We hit the ground running in the morning and we don't stop to take a break until we hit the sack to go to sleep at night. Many of us live our lives that way and unfortunately, the one thing we all need the most to navigate busy days like those is usually the first thing we tend to sacrifice ... sleep. So, in honor of all the sleep-related "holidays" that the month of March celebrates (National Napping Day, World Sleep Day, and Sleep Awareness Week), let's talk about the different ways that we can protect what our bodies need the most. Take a look at the following tips from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.

Establish a Consistent Sleep Routine

Following a consistent sleep routine will help set your body's internal clock and can increase the amount of quality sleep you get each night. Go to bed and wake up at the same times every day, and avoid sleeping in on the weekends. If you have a late night that you are trying to compensate for, opt for a short nap during the day instead.

Nap the Right Way

Be smart about how and when you nap. While you may think it is a great way to make up all of that sleep you lost, if you nap too long or nap too close to your normal bedtime, it could make things worse. Stick to a 20-minute power nap during the middle of the day if needed.

Get Sunlight as Quickly as You Can

Exposing yourself to sunlight first thing in the morning can help regulate your sleep-wake schedule. So step outdoors and enjoy your coffee with the morning sun, or simply sit by a window as you eat your breakfast.

Design a Room That Encourages Quality Sleep

The environment that you sleep in can have a huge impact on how well you actually sleep. So keep your room dark, cool, and quiet. Make sure your mattress and pillows provide the correct support that is needed and turn off all electronic devices at least an hour before you want to go to sleep.

Celebrating Sleep

Just because March has all of the sleep celebrations, that doesn't mean you should ignore your new sleep habits during the rest of the months. If there is anything to take away from those celebrations, it's the fact that we have to start prioritizing our sleep, all 365 days of the year!
