Maintaining a Healthy and Safe Summer

By Donna Stark

You've been waiting for months for summer to come around, but now that it has, you may be facing some issues you haven't even thought about. Summer comes with hotter temperatures, longer days, and sunnier skies, and even though that is exactly what you have been looking forward to, those are the very things that could throw you and your loved ones off the healthy path. Fortunately, with some simple changes to your daily habits, you can make a big impact on everyone's day-to-day state of health. Take a look below.

Food Safety

Summer isn't summer until you grill and eat outdoors, but when you do, don't forget to pay attention to the recommended food safety guidelines. It's vital that you grill your meat to the correct temperature and that you keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Make sure your potato salads and creamy dressings are sitting in a cooler or on top of ice and pack your perishable foods back up as soon as the meal is over. And, just in case there is a problem with your grill, it's also a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher within reach.

Germ Safety

We've spent the last year hearing how important it is to wash our hands frequently throughout the day, and, well, that hasn't changed one bit. If you have little ones, teach them the importance of hand washing, the correct way to do so, and the appropriate times to scrub themselves clean. Frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of illness.

Sun Safety

Decrease the risk of dehydration, sunburn, and heat illnesses by paying attention to how much sun exposure you are getting. If you are going to be outdoors for extended periods of time, be sure to follow the guidelines below.

  • Carry a water bottle and stay hydrated
  • Apply sunscreen frequently throughout the day, especially after swimming or sweating a lot
  • Engage in physical activities during the morning or evening, when temperatures are cooler
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heatstroke and heat exhaustion

Maintaining a Healthy and Safe Summer

Summer is the time when families will be enjoying each other's company and engaging in more activities outdoors. However, it is also a time when mishaps and heat-related illnesses are on the rise. So, play it safe this year and follow the guidelines above so everyone can enjoy all the fun adventures that lie ahead!
