3 Reasons Tanning Beds Are Harmful to Your Health

By Virginia Laird

For many across the nation, as spring approaches, it is the time of year to begin getting your best tan. While the color of a beautiful tan can be enticing, the means with which one gets a tan can offer a host of health issues. Dermatologists admit that laying in a tanning bed is one of the worst things people can do for their skin. A few reasons you need to avoid the tanning bed include:

  • Tanning causes premature wrinkling
  • Tanning can lead to skin cancer
  • Tanning can damage the eyes

Tanning Causes Premature Wrinkling

For the majority of those who love a luxurious tan, the idea of wrinkles is unheard of. Still, many flock to tanning beds in search of the ideal summer glow. Experts admit that using a tanning bed to help achieve your ideal tan can increase the aging process of the skin. This can lead to premature wrinkling. Dermatologists recommend that you avoid a tanning bed to prevent rapid aging of your skin.

Tanning Can Lead to Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is something that many would love to avoid. And while there are increasing numbers of skin cancer cases, there are still those who choose to tan in a tanning bed. Dermatologists indicate that many who tan in a tanning bed increase their chances of developing skin cancer by 50 percent. Most of these cases are of melanoma, the leading and most detrimental type of skin cancer. Experts suggest that the best way to avoid skin cancer is to be sure to protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen and avoiding tanning beds.

Tanning Can Damage the Eyes

Health and wellness experts suggest that tanning in a tanning bed can do damage to the eyes. Although the tanning salon would have you believe that these beds are safe for the eyes, there is nothing safe about having the UV rays exposed to your eyes for a long period of time. Some experts suggest that such exposure can lead to issues with vision. It is suggested that you avoid tanning beds to help prevent damage to your eyes.

Rather than heading to the tanning salon this spring to achieve your golden brown tan, experts suggest that you opt for a spray tan.
