4 Ways the Outdoors Improves Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
We live in a world that spends a lot of time indoors. We stay inside to beat the heat, hide from the cold, watch TV, play on the computer, and do a million other things. Unfortunately, all of the modern conveniences of the world mean that we spend far less time outdoors than in years past. But is that really a bad thing? Yes! Getting outside is imperative to good health. If you’re guilty of spending a little too much time inside, take a look at these ways the great outdoors can improve your health today.
Allows for Sun Exposure
It seems as though everyone today is scared of the sun. We’ve been told time and again to wear sunscreen and stay in the shade and watch for growths on the skin. While it’s true that too much sun exposure can cause problems, we still need some sunshine in our lives. And getting outside can help us get it. Soaking in some sun allows for Vitamin D absorption, which helps keep us healthy both mentally and physically.
Gives You Fresh Air to Breathe
As long as you’re not in the thick of the city, getting outside allows you to take in some fresh air. Why is this good? It strengthens the lungs and also helps keeps us in a good mood. We need fresh air. We need a real breeze and air that hasn’t been filtered or contaminated. Getting a little fresh air in your life is good for you in multiple ways, so get outdoors and breathe deep.
Improves Mental Wellness
People who don’t go outside often experience depression or a feeling of the blues. They simply don’t get the sun or fresh air that they need for good mental health. In fact, those who go on at least one walk in nature on a daily basis have less instances of depression than almost anyone else. If you want to stay healthy mentally, getting outdoors is key.
Leads to Less Stress
We’re all going to experience stress. It’s a part of life. But getting outside may help reduce some of that stress. Put on some shoes and go for a walk. The combination of exercise and the outdoors is enough to reduce stress and leave you feeling better than ever before.
If you’re not taking the time to get outside, it’s definitely time to start! You need the great outdoors for better health. Dress appropriately, pack what you need, and get outside for that sunshine and fresh air. Make this a part of your normal routine, and you may find your health improve like never before.
