Can You Slow Down Aging with the Right Diet?

By Stepy Kamei

We've all got to face the facts sooner or later: Aging is inevitable. We all dread it,  some of us to an extreme amount. One look at all the treatments available to seemingly "hide" signs of aging on the face and it's not hard to admit that we, as a society, have a real problem accepting that we can age gracefully. When it comes down to it, if you live a healthy lifestyle by committing to healthy habits on a daily basis, you'll more than likely show these positive life choices on your face and in your body even as time goes on and you begin to enter the Golden Years. One of the most important ways you can fight off the negative signs of aging is by consuming a healthy diet.

The Healthy Diet: The Mediterranean Diet

Scientists, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals alike have all been singing the praises of the Mediterranean diet for a while now, and for good reason. Study after study has shown that people who follow this type of diet tend to live longer. This is in no small part due to the likelihood that these people experience less stress, have more stable blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and stronger cognitive thinking skills as a direct outcome of the foods they consume.

Incorporating This Diet into Your Own

The Mediterranean diet is not necessarily a specific and rigid diet plan, as much as it is helping to contribute to a healthier way of living on an overall scale. It's less about what you start to eat specifically, and more about getting rid of the unhealthy foods you may have grown accustomed to consuming over the years.

The Mediterranean diet consists largely of whole, unprocessed foods, eaten straight from the source. Think whole grains, beans, legumes, lean protein, and fresh fruits and vegetables. These are all foods which are low in sugar, fat, and salt content, which are all major contributing factors to accelerating the aging process. Processed, fatty, and artificial foods increase inflammation in the body, which has been known to lead to joint pain and stiffness and cognitive impairment. The high amount of antioxidants found in these natural foods has also been shown to improve skin health, texture, and appearance, as the antioxidants work to fight off free radicals and prevent them from damaging the skin cells.

When you make the decision to stick to a healthier eating plan, as well as take care of your overall health in all aspects of your life, you're bound to reduce the signs of aging.
