5 Safety Tips for Holiday Decorating

By Brandi Swieter

Decorating around the holidays needs to get done with extreme caution. While many may feel like it’s a fun pastime to enjoy with family, others will quickly realize the dangers that can come along with getting the job done. With five safety tips for holiday decorating, people can get the task finished easier.

Work Together

No one should decorate alone. It leaves people susceptible to falls and accidents as there is no one around to help stop a problem before it starts, such as someone moving a ladder or letting a person know whether they need to move to the left or right to hang something. It’s best to work together so there is always someone nearby to help keep the process safe.

Check Lights Before Hanging

Too many people grab their strands of lights from the year prior and begin hanging them around the house. Once they have them all hung and realize a bulb has burnt out, some tend to attempt to fix it from where it’s located. This is an unsafe practice that could easily lead to falls. It’s important to check lights before hanging them to ensure each bulb works.

Secure the Ladder

Whether a bit of snow happened to fall or the ground is simply unsturdy in the area, people need to be careful while using a ladder. It should be secure and settled on the ground nicely before anyone steps foot on it. An unstable ladder may shift while someone is using it and cause an accident.

Cover the Cords

Lots of cords need to get plugged in around the holidays, with lights and other decorations requiring power to run. It is wise to cover these cords or carefully tuck them into a safe space where they can’t get tripped over. One simple trip could cause an injury and/or wipe out a display.

Lift With the Legs

Heavy items should always get lifted carefully to avoid injury. Never twist while picking things up, and always be sure to lift with the legs rather than putting the full amount of weight on the back and shoulders. Whether carrying in the Christmas tree or getting out the boxes of decorations, it’s necessary to lift in this manner rather than any other way.

Decorate carefully this holiday season to avoid back pain. If you do make a wrong move and end up suffering from a stiff neck or sore back, visit The Joint Chiropractic to get an adjustment and alleviate the symptoms.
