The Chiropractic Advice Students Should Follow

By Brandi Swieter

With school back in session shortly after August arrives, students everywhere (and their parents) need to start thinking about how they’re going to avoid back pain while carrying around their heavy book bags and belongings. Each year, the list of items a student needs in school grows, making kids and teens responsible for lugging around a ton of stuff. This is especially true for those in middle and high school who need to bring books back and forth from their locker to various classrooms. By following some chiropractic advice, more students can find an easier way of handling their load and staying pain-free for the school year.

Keep the Backpack High on the Back

Individuals who wear a backpack on their backs (instead of following the shoulder trend) should be sure to keep their bags higher up. A bag that hangs low increases pressure put on the body, particularly the shoulders. Everyone should be sure to use the provided adjustable straps and keep their backpacks at the correct placement to avoid extra strain and tension.

Wear Both Shoulder Straps

The one shoulder trend in which students throw just one strap of their bags over one shoulder should be avoided. A backpack should always be worn using both straps so the weight is distributed as evenly as possible. Only placing one strap over one shoulder will force the student to lean more to one side, as well as cause extreme discomfort on that side of the body.

Pack the Bag Lightly

Unless absolutely necessary, students should not pack their bags full of every book needed for every class. Some books can be left in the locker if they are not needed for assignments to complete at home. Keeping the backpack as light as possible will help to prevent back and shoulder pain that comes along with carrying too much weight.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Aside from the backpack issue, students have other struggles to worry about. Many want to wear fashionable shoes that stand out, but this can lead to foot, leg, and back pain if people aren’t careful. Wearing comfortable shoes to school is important because students often have to spend time walking from one classroom to the next, as well as to their lockers. The issue of comfortable shoes is especially important for physical activities, such as when gym class comes around. Wearing the right pair can be a huge help in keeping students pain-free throughout their days.

Students struggling to follow this advice, or who still have pain even when the advice is taken, should visit The Joint Chiropractic. A doctor of chiropractic can perform an assessment to determine if any joint restrictions are present in the body. They may also have some additional tips that are worth trying out to avoid this type of pain in the future. The school year is stressful enough. Students don’t need the additional stress of having to experience frequent pain due to the heavy carrying load they have to manage.
