How Chiropractic and Dental Care Coincide

By Brandi Goodman

Both Chiropractic Health Month and Dental Hygiene Month fall to October. Both types of care are vital to overall health and can actually work together to make improvements. Oftentimes, poor oral hygiene can lead to pain that chiropractic can help. Your overall well-being is encouraged by both chiropractors and dentists alike.

Preaching Prevention

Your dentist and your chiropractor each have one goal in mind -- prevention. They'll each preach how prevention is key in maintaining your health. You want to make regular visits so that problems can be detected and corrected right away, rather than waiting until there's already a major issue. It's easier to handle a health concern if it's detected immediately instead of waiting until it has caused serious harm.

Improving Symptoms

A chiropractor may be able to help improve symptoms caused by poor oral health. Teeth and jaw pain can lead to headaches. It can also cause pain in the neck and shoulder. Chiropractic can ease the discomfort felt. It won't take all of it away, though, which is why your doctor of chiropractic should encourage a dental visit. You'll have your symptoms improved even more if you see a dentist and get the underlying problem taken care of first.

Eliminating Dental Discomfort

There are times when your dental visit takes longer than planned. You may find yourself with your head tilted back for a while as your teeth get looked at, cleaned, and fixed. This can lead to some discomfort in your neck and shoulders. Visiting a chiropractor immediately following the dentist can eliminate some of this discomfort.

Receiving Health Tips Galore

Both the chiropractor and the dentist will offer more than just the procedure planned. They each offer valuable health tips as well. Each type of doctor will advise eating nutritious foods and avoiding sugary options. They will also encourage high water consumption since drinking lots of water will help both the teeth and the joints. Healthy living is encouraged by both parties and the tips they provide will help you to get there.

Though chiropractic cannot treat dental problems, it can help with some of the symptoms. Headaches caused by tooth pain, for example, may be lessened with the help of chiropractic. Both chiropractic and dental care should be on everyone's health plan. Work to improve your oral care and health overall with visits both to the dentist and to the chiropractor.
