Rain or Snow Struggles? The Chiropractor Has Advice

By Brandi Goodman

Rain and snow are two common struggles people face -- sometimes in the same season. If you plan on being outside in these weather conditions, there are some chiropractic tips you should consider. This is especially true if you will be performing related tasks, such as shoveling snow. Safety is of the utmost importance.

See a Chiropractor

Cold weather can bring about joint discomfort. Many people even say they know rain is coming because their joints start aching. See a chiropractor regularly throughout the cold and rainy months so you can alleviate some of your joint inflammation and keep your body feeling as well as possible. You'll need flexibility if you're going to handle outdoor tasks, particularly when it's snowing.

Wear Supportive Shoes

The shoes you wear outdoors will play a major role in your safety during poor weather conditions. Rain can cause slippery surfaces that will require you to have a supportive and sturdy pair of shoes. Snow will cause even worse conditions, with high-traction boots necessary. You should always have proper footwear on when outside so you can maintain your balance and keep yourself safe from injury.

Take Regular Breaks

If you must handle outdoor chores in poor weather, it's best to take regular breaks. Don't force yourself to get it all done at once. Instead, warm up inside for a bit before returning to tackle your task. Be sure you're stretching during those intervals as well to keep your joints limber and able to handle the work.

Don't Overload Your Shovel

When it comes to shoveling in particular, you need to take extra precautions. The chore is a lot of work and can be harsh on your back and body. Be sure not to overlord your shovel for starters. It can add more weight than you think and can quickly wear out your back, arms, and shoulders. Only scoop a small amount and be sure to walk over the deposit area rather than attempting to throw it or reach.

Consider your chiropractor's advice when dealing with rain and snow struggles. It is better to be safe than sorry, and you want to avoid any possible mishaps that could easily occur with harsh weather conditions. The ground is much more slippery and unstable when precipitation falls, so taking precautions should always be at the top of your priority list.
