Nothing is Typical about You or Chiropactic Care
By Donna Stark
There really isn’t anything typical about the patients that come in for chiropractic care. Each person has their own distinct health history and presents symptoms that are unique to their body. The reasons for their visits may vary, but there is one that stands out, one that is a common source of aggravation, one that may be more “typical” than the others.
Your chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic is no stranger to seeing patients with this common source of pain. It’s the pain that comes from injuries sustained during exercise or playing sports. Joint restrictions, strains, sprains, you name it … all are par for the course, and nearly every one of them can be successfully evaluated and treated with chiropractic care.
Strategies to Reduce Injuries
Reducing the chance of injury from the beginning is always better than after-the-fact treatments. So save yourself the pain and follow these tips.
- Warm-up - The importance of warming up before your workout can’t be stressed enough, even though many people tend to neglect it. The risk of pulling a muscle, straining your back, or incurring a more serious injury is increased without a proper warm-up before exercise. So try to incorporate some light stretching and some gentle cardio to get your blood pumping and your body moving before you step into the intense part of your workout or game.
- Proper technique - Using the proper technique while performing a specific exercise or playing a sport is another way to help reduce injuries. Become “coachable” and learn from others, and then follow those instructions every time you play or practice. It’s also a good idea to stay within your own skill level and to not push yourself past your own physical capabilities. Being competitive is great, being foolish … not so much.
- Cool-down - Cooling down after exercise or your game is another important tip for reducing injuries. When you are finished with your physical activity, make sure you take at least 10 minutes to stretch out your muscles and joints before you finish up.
- Chiropractic care - Maintaining good flexibility, balance, and coordination in all your muscle groups will enhance your athletic ability and will reduce the chances of injury, and getting regular adjustments helps with that. Also, if you do have a minor injury, the healing time can be reduced with chiropractic adjustments as well, which gets you back into the game a lot sooner than without.
