The Road to Optimal Fitness and Health

By Donna Stark

We all know that exercise is vital to optimal health and wellness, but some of us may need a little extra prodding to fully embrace the idea. After all, the thought of entering the fitness world can feel extremely overwhelming. With all the different opinions, routines, and styles to choose from, it can be really hard to know where to start, but don't let that stop you. Just take a few minutes to read the following tips below and then get ready to feel better than ever before!

Get the Right Gear

If you have never exercised consistently before, if your workout clothes are tattered and torn, or if your shoes have more holes than the swiss cheese in your sandwich, you should probably consider heading to the stores. Investing in the right gear will definitely enhance your workouts, but that doesn't mean you need to spend a ton of money. Think function over fashion. Select the clothing and footwear that are comfortable and weather-appropriate for the exercises you choose.

Choose the Right Activities

How are you supposed to know what the right exercises are if you are new to fitness? Well, you can start by thinking about what you used to love doing in years past. Did you always look forward to those weekend hikes with your family? Search for some trails near your house. Did you love the freedom that came when you rode your bike with friends? Hit the road on your adult bike. Finding activities that you look forward to and enjoy doing will help keep you committed to your journey.

Mix it Up

That being said, don't forget to try new things and add different elements to your fitness routine too! Remember, you want to see progress and the best way to achieve that is to incorporate a variety of exercises that will increase your endurance, build your strength, and tone your body. If you work out in a gym, ask a trainer to help you design a fitness program that will deliver the results you are looking for.

Fuel Your Body

In addition to fueling your body with the proper nutrition it needs before, during, and after your workouts, you also need to make sure you are staying hydrated! If you don't drink enough water you will be at an increased risk for muscle cramping and fatigue, and nobody wants to deal with those while embarking on a new fitness routine.

The Road to Optimal Fitness and Health

At first, it may be challenging to adapt to this new lifestyle of yours, but don't let that discourage you.  Give yourself some grace and stick to your commitment. Eventually, it will become second nature to you!
