What Is Blocking You From Your Fitness Goals?
By Donna Stark
There are few things more frustrating than not being able to reach a goal, and it's for this reason that so many people give up on their fitness journey. It may even be the reason why you want to give up on yours. But what if instead of the time and effort that isn't working, it's a few other things that are keeping you from achieving your goals? Would you reconsider your commitment? Take a look at some of the most common mistakes that can derail even the best of us.
Sticking to the Numbers
The weight you lift, the time it takes you to run a mile, the number of steps you take each day sure, these numbers are important for you to track your progress, but don't let them have the final say. There are many legitimate reasons why they could change on a given day. Maybe you had a couple nights of disrupted sleep and your body is tired or perhaps the weather is affecting your performance. Try to figure out what is causing the change and adjust your schedule before you throw in the towel.
Skipping the Right Nutrition
Trying to build strength? If you are, you need to treat your body to some extra nutrition, specifically protein and carbohydrates, after your workout. Protein helps to rebuild muscle that's been broken down during your exercise and prevent your body from breaking down any more of your muscle for the energy it is looking for, and carbohydrates help to fight fatigue.
Not Getting Enough Sleep
One of the biggest hurdles to working out is having enough energy, so make sure you are getting the rest your body needs. Sleep deprivation can steal your energy, focus, and muscle function, and can also affect your moods and judgment which may push you toward that "I quit" mentality. It's important to prioritize sleep, so try to establish a consistent sleep routine as soon as possible.
Doing the Same Things
It's time to switch things up! Engaging in the same exercises over and over and over again is not only boring, but it may hinder your progress too. Try adding a variety of exercises to your fitness routine so you can build strength, tone your body, and increase your endurance. Once you start to feel bored with that, switch things up again!
