Building a Strong Foundation of Good Health
By Donna Stark
Did you take a handful of candy from the dish on your coworker's desk, did you choose that crisp, fizzy soda over a glass of water, or did you eat out for lunch instead of packing your own? Getting caught up with unhealthy choices is easy, isn't it? So, it should come as no surprise when your children get caught up with the same unhealthy decisions too. But that doesn't make it OK and you should still want to make sure you are setting your children up with a strong foundation of healthy habits. Here are some simple ways to inspire good choices and optimal well-being.
Be a Role Model
There are many different ways in which you can be a good role model for your children, but your eating habits should definitely top the list. If your children see you eating a poor diet, they are more likely to follow suit. So, make sure you are purchasing, ordering, and consuming nutrient-dense foods as often as you can in front of your children. This is a great way to help them develop good judgment and independence when they eat.
Involve Everyone
Ask everyone who comes in regular contact with your children to hop on board the heathy train with you! If your children are around their grandparents, babysitters, or friends quite often, ask them to honor your health guidelines. More likely than not, they won't mind offering fruit over a bag of cookies when you explain your position. Who knows? You may even inspire them to eat healthier too!
Shop Wisely
The truth is, we are all tempted in some way or another when shopping at the grocery store, but that doesn't mean you need to bring those temptations home! Stick to buying the bulk of your order from the perimeter of the store and avoid the aisles that cause the most cravings for junk. A great way to get in and out of the store with exactly what you need and nothing more is to create a shopping list before you head out.
Teach Your Children the Basics
Sharing what you know about nutrition while cooking or eating is a great way to reinforce your children's decisions. You can also invite them to learn even more by including them in the meal planning, letting them pick out the ingredients, and allowing them to help with the cooking.
Building a Healthy Foundation
Helping your children build a solid foundation around nutrition doesn't have to be difficult. By following the simple tips above, your children will start making those healthier choices all on their own before you know it!
