How to Relieve Stress and Bring Balance to Your Days

By Donna Stark

Wisdom, beautiful memories, grandchildren, and more time than you ever had before to travel the world. These are some of the things you can look forward to as you age. But old age also comes with plenty of new challenges that can feel overwhelming. So overwhelming, in fact, that a peaceful retirement can suddenly turn into months and months of stress-filled days. If you are struggling to find the balance between peace and stress in your life, keep reading. Your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have listed some of their favorite activities that will help you get through your days.

Meditation

A lot of our stressful thoughts come from fear of the future and regrets about the past. However, with some practice, meditation can calm those thoughts down. Try to include at least 15 minutes of meditation into your daily routine by sitting still, practicing deep breathing exercises, and focusing on the positive energy surrounding you. It may be just enough to improve your day's trajectory.

Physical Activity

No matter how old you are, physical activity can do wonders for both your physical and mental health. Daily exercise can help improve your mobility, maintain your independence, and reduce the risk of serious health conditions, while also reducing the levels of stress and anxiety in your life. It is generally recommended to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day, so go for that morning walk, join a yoga class, or head out for a game of golf.

Volunteer

In addition to helping those in your community, volunteering will also help improve your overall well-being and quality of life. Volunteering will help you maintain positive relationships with others, build a circle of supportive friends and acquaintances, and increase your confidence. It will also keep your mind preoccupied with good thoughts instead of those negative ones that keep you worried and stressed.

Sleep

It's hard to manage your stress well if you are sleep deprived, so it is important to stay on top of your rest. That means you need to make it a priority! Take a hard look at your bedtime routine and sleep environment. Are there any changes you can make? Here are some suggestions if you need help.

  • Turn off the TV and other electronic devices at least an hour before bed
  • Engage in a relaxing activity before you try to go to sleep
  • Make sure your room is dark, cool, and quiet
  • Invest in a white-noise machine to drown out disturbances

Bringing Balance to Your Days

Take your days back and don't allow them to overwhelm you anymore.  With the tips above, you can easily reduce your stress and you may even begin to enjoy this stage of your life! There is so much to look forward to now, don't you think?
