For the Win: Beets May Beat Meds

By Tom Herrin

Some of us are picky eaters.  It comes pretty natural.  We live in a world where everything imaginable is available in some kind of ready-to-eat form.  If there is a desire for fresh foods, there are plenty of ways to obtain them, too.  The choices seem to be really attractive, which leaves some of the more ordinary foods with a lot less appeal.  When people begin to look for some healthier foods to include in their diet, they may want to return to some of those foods that are more plain.  Their benefits can loom large on the scale of what is good for the body.  One of those that is well worth a second look is beets.

Athletic Performance Can Be Better

Believe it or not, many athletes include beets, or beet juice, in their regular training routine.  It contains nitrates that are thought to improve endurance by a noticeable amount.  Even better seems to be the fact that the greatest effects are realized a few hours after consumption.  This is ideal for the endurance factor.  Runners and bicycle riders can be beneficiaries of such an addition to their diets.  For anyone requiring more stamina, it should be considered.

Heart And Circulatory Related Benefits Are Good

Beets seem to be able to provide several things that affect the heart and circulation.  They have materials that help the blood to carry oxygen more efficiently.  They also have substances that allow the blood vessels to relax, helping to lower blood pressure.  With better functioning arteries, the blood supply to the brain is increased.  This helps to improve mental abilities and brain function.  Both are obvious problems in today’s population, particularly in older adults.

Digestive And Filtering Processes Are Assisted

Beets are high in fiber.  That is always a help in avoiding several common digestive problems.  Colon cancer is commonly linked to chronic constipation.  One of the most impressive benefits is to the liver.  There are very few things that actually help the liver.  Beets is one that has a strong correlation to easing the load the liver has to bear.  They can help to reduce fats and assist in the job of filtering toxins from the body.  With the amount of medications and other unnatural substances the liver has to sift through these days, it is an organ that can use all the help it can get.  Any of these benefits alone can be worth adding beets to the diet.  Since they are natural, they are certainly worth a try.
