Most people are always on the lookout for ways to improve the healthiness of their diet. There are lots of ways, and many of them are quite effective. For those looking for something simple, they can do that without spending large amounts of money. Fish can be part of anyone's diet with little or no extra expense. It is widely known that those cultures in which fish is a significant part of their diet have generally good health as a result. Americans have gotten accustomed to diets that are much less healthy, likely due to their overall prosperity. Adding fish to the menu can mean a boost to most people's health.
It Can Help with Growth and Development
Fish can be especially important to the development of young children. This is particularly important for development of the eyes and brain. This is attributed mostly to omega-3 fatty acids in some fish. It is well known for its effect on grey matter in the brain. It may be suggested that expectant mothers consume fish, but there is some caution to be used. It is recommended that they eat fish that are not higher in the food chain in order to avoid the chances of mercury being passed along to the fetus. Mercury can have a negative effect on children's development, particularly the brain. Limiting the amount of fish and eating the right kind can be the best option. It is a matter of the right kind of moderation.
It May Help Prevent Depression
In recent times, depression has become an increasingly common problem for many people. There is evidence that eating fish can make people less likely to be depressed, and those who take antidepressant medication may find it more effective. Eating fish is also believed to help those with some mental issues. It never hurts to try it.
It May Help to Protect the Eyes as People Age
Those of us who are getting a little older tend to have more trouble with our eyesight. What we may think of as simple wear from the years may actually be a breakdown in the eye structure that may be avoidable, at least to some extent. Eating fish can help reduce the risk of macular degeneration as shown by some studies. I try to eat some kind of fish a couple of times per week. The easy way is to grab a can of salmon, tuna, or sardines. I can get some of these for as little as a dollar per can.
